Hey, I’m Katie, but you can call me Tater. This is my blog.

[My, how time has flown. A lot can change in a short time and my outdated bio is proof. This page will grow as I grow. I hope you'll come along for the ride. To see Version 1 of this page with my weight loss story written in August 2009, click here. To read about how blogging changed my life, click here. To hear about how I quit my job to become a Registered Dietitian, click here.]

After graduating from college with a BA in Spanish, I dove headfirst into the working world convinced I’d climb straight to the top of the corporate ladder–make cutthroat decisions, make money, make Donald Trump weep.

This lasted all of about three years, two jobs and one brief stint of FUNemployment before I realized a 9-to-5 desk job wasn’t for me… no matter how many countries I got to visit (five, for the record).

In a gradual but forceful transition, I lost interest in climbing higher, moving forward or making more. My life became a stagnant pool of forgotten drive festering in boredom. I needed something more. I sought a creative outlet, and this blog was it.

I don’t remember exactly how it happened, when I realized it was time or why I knew what WordPress was at all. But a few clicks and one potato post later, my fate was sealed. It was August 8, 2009. I posted five times that day. So that’s where that forgotten drive went…

Prior to Sweet Tater, I didn’t know food blogs existed. But as quickly as I’d hit “publish” (five times) that first day, the connections started to come. I heard from long-lost schoolmates, long-forgotten acquaintances and a few short-sighted meanies. I met other people who did what I did, who loved food fully and who obsessed (healthily). Things started to make sense.

As I directed more energy toward my blog, my vision of it started to shift from a temporary hobby to a drop-everything-quit-your-job-start-your-life-NOW kick in the face. Why should anyone spend a third of their life petering away at something that doesn’t light a fire deep inside?

Writing about food, exploring culinary techniques, educating myself (and others) on health trends… I burned. So this is it. This is my more.

I don’t think I’ll ever be a full-time blogger. I’m not that big of a deal. But this little corner of the world I’ve created was exactly what I needed to push myself in the right direction. When I walked away from a comfortable job with financial security straight into a classroom to study nutrition, I was scared, yes, but also inspired.

Over the past 15 months and 1,200 posts, I am exactly one year and 12 classes closer to becoming a Registered Dietitian. (So you want to be an RD, too? See my rundown on what it takes to get there academically.)

I can’t thank you enough for spending a little time here every once in a while, for commenting, emailing and tweeting, for sharing your stories and for helping me write mine. I have made some true friends in this community and for that I am truly grateful.

And to think… it all started with a humble potato post.

My self portrait

  1. Hi Katie, well done on your journey :) you look great!

  2. Thank you for this blog. You are truly an inspiration.

  3. Hey Katie! I know you’ve probably been told this 100x before, but I love your blog! I found it as I was looking up some healthy foods. You’re an inspiration to me because that’s what I’m trying to do: exercise and eat healthy, real foods to enjoy life. I hate calorie counting. If dieters could get to this site and read your experience I think it would change their whole outlook! Thanks for writing! Keep it up, I love reading!

  4. thank you, heather! i actually have not heard that 100x before (nor would i ever get sick of it if i had). your outlook on health is dead on: exercise, eat real foods and enjoy life. thanks for reading and please keep in touch!

  5. But, Katie, DIGLYCERIDES and SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE make my food taste better! :D

  6. WOW! Your blog is awesome! I just read your bio and I can’t believe your transformation. You were beautiful before but you look amazing now! I love hot yoga, too! If I go a day without yoga, I’m just not the same! Thank you for sharing your story!

  7. hey nicole! that’s very sweet of you. thanks so much for stopping by. i’m with you on the hot yoga. it’s a true addiction. aaaand i love it.

  8. i listen to my body as often as possible. and all i’m still hearing is, “that glass of wine looks mighty tasty!”

    great blog, Tatie!

  9. im glad you found my blog :) i really am enjoying looking through yours! you’ve got yourself another reader, my friend!

  10. You are an amazing writer!

  11. love the site!

  12. I love these ‘rules’ :) I obsess way too much over calories and it just gets me down and doesn’t get my weight down!!!

    Thanks for the wake-up call!!!
    Em

  13. Good for you girl, I love Bikram. Its the best workout ever. Well, that and running. :) I do them both!

  14. [...] urges you to enjoy learning all about Katie, her DVD reviews, and keep coming back each week for Caturdays.  & so much [...]

  15. I’m SO glad I came across your blog right now. I’ve been exercising for YEARS, and I’ve yet to find my “niche.” I’ve done some yoga in the past (for a college class, actually) and I loved it. But after that semester, I never did it again. No access to classes was the main reason.

I can see myself loving and NEEDING yoga in my life because I seem to have a love/hate relationship with exercise. While I love how it makes me feel *most* of the time, exercise has also become a source of stress in my life. And it shouldn’t be that way.

Do you have a good exercise DVD to recommend? Or would you suggest I start taking classes?

    • hi gracie! i’m so happy!

for yoga i definitely recommend starting with a class. i think having a skilled instructor is really important. plus, it’s hard to look at a tv screen when you’re contorted into all kinds of crazy poses. it takes away from the experience. that said, if you’d like to ease into yoga with a dvd first, there’s nothing wrong with that. i review fitness dvds for DVD Talk and have gotten several yoga ones… i hate to admit it but the best one so far has been dallas cowboys cheerleaders yoga. you can see the review here: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/42239/dallas-cowboys-cheerleaders-power-squad-bod-body-slimming-yoga/

yogaworks body slim is also pretty good (but yogaworks fit abs is terrible!). i haven’t written the review for that one yet…

if you’re talking ANY fitness video, i say go for physique 57. absolutely the best, most unique workout i have ever done with a dvd. i love it. http://sweettater.wordpress.com/2010/02/20/physique-57-review/

      hope that helps!

  16. wow – not only do I love the fact that you lost accidentally (which is the only way I’ve ever lost weight), but I loved the end of your shpeel….you’re in control, stop making excuses. It’s that easy. Really. Great attitude!

  17. such wonderful words to motivate! thank you!

  18. hey girl – i love your blog :)
are you gluten-free? i’m starting a gf trail tomorrow for tummy issues and would love your thoughts!
    thanks girl! god bless.
    -r

    • hey rebekah!
i’m gluten-free by choice (most of the time) because my boyfriend is gluten-free by necessity. it’s just easier to keep all the wheaty things out of the house rather than buy things for me and different things for him. plus, i’ve actually noticed a marked improvement in my digestion since eliminating most wheat and gluten and notice a change (for the worse) when i consume it.

there are lots of gluten-free products available now and you can make substitutions to just about any recipe to make it work for this diet.

      good luck!

  19. Great story, Katie!! I looove yoga myself but haven’t been able to do it these past few months. I miss it a lot! I started mixing it with running last year when I was training for my half marathon and it was great! It helped me be injure-free! That is the one thing I’m scared about, getting injured. I also agree about eating clean. None of that nasty, preservative stuff. I love to cook. I love to use fresh and colorful ingredients and spices. Food should taste good and it should be adventurous and wholesome :) . thanks for sharing your beautiful story!

  20. Just found your blog, I love it! Amazing attitude, I look forward to reading more :)

  21. I was just searching for something to read, and came across your blog…great story, very inspirational!

  22. Wow, I can relate to this story so much! In college, I was very active- I trained for triathlons – ate really healthy, and maintained a weight btw 115-120 (I am also 5’6”). After college, I suffered multiple running injuries, did not have access to the school gym anymore, and started waitressing. I gained 15 pounds by not running and eating too much restaurant food. Then I stopped weighing myself, but I know I’ve gained more weight b/c of how my clothes fit. I’m not overweight, but I don’t feel as healthy and energetic as I did before. I’m still working on getting into a healthy post-college lifestyle. Your story is inspiring!

  24. I just found your blog via the praise on “Inner-workings of a College Grad,” and I’m really impressed. My story is actually similar to yours, except I didn’t stop at the “low end of the healthy range.” It sounds like you have a good, healthy perspective, but NEVER lose sight of how beautiful you already are!

  25. I love how you realized that the best way to reach your best size and health was without obsession. I really love you and your blog and all you have to share. I just wanted to mention that here.

Self-love is where the change happens. Which is why I’m working so hard to promote it on my blog. I have a 30 days of self-love thing in the works over there. I would be honored if you checked it out. http://www.faithfitnessfun.com/30-days-of-self-love/

  26. I think we are twins. Same terrible food relationship – anorexia and binging but never purging. Same crazy theory that diet foods and hours on the elliptical were the key to being healthy. Same height and weight at our “highest”, and then same sudden success and end weight when we combined hot yoga (bikram!) and REAL foods. Not a happy road, but a happy ending! Glad we can both make it work :)

  27. Hey! :) I absolutely love your blog. I can relate to youu so much, a healthy lifestyle is what i’m maintaining and i love it :) I always felt uncomfortable with the extra pounds and once i became vegan, all those pounds just melted away without much effort!

  28. I have a very very similar story. I was at the healthy living summit and thought you were an amazing speaker. Thank you for being brave and sharing your story with everyone. It takes some pretty intense bravery to share something so personal. But at the same time, yours is a story that many women can relate to, and many have even lived it! I am “recovered” now and with my healthy lifestyle I am a little lighter than I would have expected, but I feel great and am fit and healthy. It’s funny what our bodies will do, isn’t it?

  29. Oh. My. God. I just spent an embarrassing amount of time looking through your blog, and I’m in love. I completely agree with your food philosophy, your writing style, and your approach to life. In fact, you remind me of one of my best friends from a previous life – kudos! Love the blog, keep it up :)

  30. Ok, tears in my eyes, roaming all over your blog. I am so glad you’re in Stew’s life. Hey, he got more hits cuz he’s so funny (great writer too!) but even his hijacked blog is ALLLLL about you! Love, your other mom

  31. What a cool find – your blog is going right into my favorites. Yippeee for low-maintenance, down-to-earth, honest and funny people who make you smile!

  32. Oh man, I just found your blog, and I think it’s such a breath of fresh air. So great, and very inspiring, too. Wonderful.
